The first time a student holds a wild bird can change how they see their future. Your gift helps make that moment possible.
Every dollar raised for WYOBIRD this Giving Day funds paid undergraduate internships—giving UW students hands-on experience in ornithology without having to choose between earning a paycheck and preparing for a career in conservation.
Our Avian Interns band migrating birds at our field station in Laramie and monitor tree swallow nests at Hutton Lake National Wildlife Refuge. They build practical skills, contribute to research, and discover where their interests can take them. Paid internships make these opportunities accessible to students who could not otherwise afford to participate.
Since 2023, WYOBIRD (the Wyoming Bird Initiative for Resilience and Diversity) has trained 40 undergraduates and 35 graduate students. Alongside student training and public outreach, our team has banded more than 3,000 birds representing 90 species, helping track how our local birds are doing.
Our goal this year: $5,000 in paid opportunities for UW students. Your gift will help pay interns to:
- Band migrating birds in Laramie, learning to safely handle, identify, and measure wild birds.
- Monitor tree swallow nests at Hutton Lake National Wildlife Refuge, gaining experience studying nesting and reproductive success.
- Collect scientific data, building field research skills they can carry into conservation careers.
